On 11th November 1940 the Fleet Air Arm shocked the world by carrying out a stunning surprise attack on the Italian Fleet laying at anchor in the harbour of Taranto. Despite the attack being delivered by 21 very slow Fairey Swordfish torpedo planes, the Italian Fleet was crippled and suffered severe casualties.
