SINKING THE TIRPITZ - MULTI-SIGNED REMARQUE EDITION
The Allies tried for four long years to eradicate the threat posed by the great German Battleship 'Tirpitz'. Without the need to even weigh anchor, Tirpitz could disrupt the North Atlantic Convoys and while she lurked in her Norwegian anchorage she was a huge drain on Allied resources.
RAF Bomber Command was called upon once again to attempt to sink her and, on 12th November 1944, Lancasters of 9 and 617 Squadrons took off to attack Tirpitz loaded with the massive 12,000lb 'Tallboy' bombs designed by Barnes Wallis. The 31 Lancaster crews arrived over Tromso Fjord in clear skies and, although targeted by Flak, there were no enemy fighters. One by one they dropped their loads and a number of bombs hit their target. Tirpitz rolled over and sank taking the vast part of her crew with her.
