SQUADRON LEADER DESMOND FOPP
Australian Des Fopp joined 17 Squadron just before the outbreak of war as it was re-equipping with the Hawker Hurricane. He fought over Dunkirk and later in the Battle of Britain.
On 3rd September 1940 he led a 'head-on attack' on a large formation of enemy bombers and severely damaged one of the Dorniers. He was then set upon by 3 Me109 escort fighters, which set his aircarft on fire. Fopp was hospitalised for a number of months.
