DAYS OF THUNDER
Richard taylor's tribute to the pilots and crew of the 78th FG that flew from Duxford Airfield in Cambridgeshire. Duxford was already famous for it's role in the Battle of Britain and now elcomed the US 78th Fighter Group in April 1943. Flying the massive P-47 Thunderbolt their mission was to escort heavy bombers to the targets and to engage Luftwaffe fighters.
As the Normandy invasion approached, the 78th FG undertook ground-attack missions and the 'Jug' was the perfect aircraft for this work - tough, rugged and heavily armed.
Richard Taylor shows P-47D Thunderbolts of the 78thFG departing Duxford in the spring of 1944. They are equipped with long-range tanks and Bombs for another low-level strike against targets in occupied France.
